The Stagg ECL 44 WH Cello is a solid, heavy instrument that is designed to function effectively for studio work as well as live performances, especially for beginning cellists. It has an innovative design with tuners instead of pegs, and is a cost-effective alternative to expensive options such as Yamaha. The neck/fingerboard angle is well thought out, and the cello spaces correctly to the body to ensure ease and a comfortable cello-playing position. There are a few issues to Consider, such as the sound quality, which is poor when amplified and sounds tinny even when significantly EQ'ed. Setup and positioning adjustments can also be problematic, especially with the wire frame extensions which wobble and feel unstable. The knee supports can be easily unscrewed and removed, but without them, the cello is unwieldy and hard to control. The bottom attachment is also prone to breaking as it is held on by a small piece of plastic. However, the pickup and electronics are quiet and convenient, with both volume and tone control. The battery life is fine, and the blue pilot light lets you know when it's plugged into external devices. The bridge and string height adjustment is another useful feature that is well thought out.
