Drama Editorial Review
**** "Paradise," a film from 1982 pairing Willie Aames and the iconic Phoebe Cates, has received a mixed reception from audiences, particularly when evaluated through the lens of its recent Blu-ray release from Fun City Editions. While the film itself might be labeled as a derivative ripoff of the more famous "The Blue Lagoon," it still manages to carve out a niche, primarily for fans drawn by Cates’ performance—her feature film debut—where she appears nude in several scenes, contributing to her burgeoning status as an 80's sex symbol. Critics have been somewhat harsh on the film's overall quality, citing weak plot development, poor acting, and unrealistic dialogue as significant drawbacks. The Consensus is that, aside from glimpses of Cates and some picturesque desert cinematography, "Paradise" lacks engaging content. However, the Blu-ray quality stands out as a strong point, showcasing a beautiful transfer that captures detailed visuals and rich colors, thanks to a robust restoration work that allows viewers to experience the film in its original 1:85 aspect ratio in 1080p HD for the first time. The dual-layer disc efficiently maintains a high bit rate, providing an impressive viewing experience. The inclusion of both theatrical and pre-release audio tracks, along with informative commentary and additional hidden content, add Considerable value to the release. For fans of Cates and those nostalgic for the era of 1980’s cinema, this Blu-ray release is a welcomed addition, regardless of the film's shortcomings. It encapsulates a period in the film industry where such low-budget survival stories were more common and includes enough charm to earn at least a casual viewing. Overall, while "Paradise" may not hold up as a cinematic masterpiece, the Blu-ray release is a testament to the film's place in pop culture and a chance for viewers to revisit it in an impressive new light. **
