Onun Fransız devriminin etkisiyle coşan bir devrimci; Alman milliyetçiliğine karşı çıkan bir evrenselci; kağıt oynamayı, arkadaşlarıyla tartışmayı, meyhanelerde yarışırcasına içmeyi seven ve dolayısıyla birçok kez disipline verilen bir öğrenci; dans etmekten, kızların çevresinde olmaktan hoşlanan neşeli bir genç olabileceği pek akla getirilmez.Oysa Hegel, olumlu kişisel özellikleri, bilgisi, geniş ufku ve büyük ilgi gören dersleri sayesinde Hölderlin, Schelling, Goethe, Humboldt, Fichte, Novalis, Schlegel kardeşler, Mendelssohn gibi isimlerle dostluğunu sürdürürken içinde yaşadığı toplumun en etkin şahsiyetlerinden biri haline gelmiştir. Bir yandan da dönemin siyasi, endüstriyel, toplumsal ve bilimsel devrimlerinden doğan modernliğin kendisini düşüncesinin nesnesi yapan ilk büyük filozof olarak önem kazanmıştır. Kant felsefesinin olanaklarını geliştirerek sağlam, tutarlı ve bütünlüğü olan ideal bir sisteme ulaşmayı hedeflemiş, zenginliği, kapsamı ve olgunluğu bakımından felsefe tarihinin son büyük sistemini yaratarak bu amacına nail olmuştur.Georgetown Üniversitesi’nde felsefe profesörü ve Hegel uzmanı olan Terry Pinkard, Napoléon’un egemen olduğu dönemde yaşamış, ölümünden sonra çokça yanlış anlaşılmasına ve aşıldığı iddia edilmesine karşın etkisini günümüze dek sürdürmeyi bilmiş olan bu güçlü düşünürün yaşamını belli bir bütünsellik içinde anlatmaktadır.
